50miler.com was created to help Scouts and Scouters plan better and easier backpacking trips so that they spend more time on the trail and less time in meetings.

50miler.com aims to make everything a little bit easier for the Senior Patrol Leader of the hike.
 Concept  Why 50miler.com was created
Trained Scouters who have been through B.B.A. know that a successful 50 miler requires a planning meeting, practice hikes, pack checks, and a number of other activities to increase the likelihood of a successful expedition. It's a big deal, especially when coupled with the idea of making everything "boy run." However, all the extra work will result in a better experience for the boys and their adult "assistants."

The concept for 50miler.com came from trail discussions during a memorable 50 mile trek to Thousand Island Lake in 2003 with Troop 815 of Danville, California. We talked about ways to make the experience better, and the idea of a web community of Scouts helping each other plan future backpacking trips. The concept was also supported by my conversations with parents and grandparents, who are constantly asking me, "What equipment should I get for my son as he starts backpacking?"

So we got some of the Venture Crew involved in planning the site, researching other backpacking sites, finding maps and making decisions on what products to feature. We hope to have Scouts moderating the forums and selecting products to the extent that their busy schedules (and parents) will allow.
 The Team  Who's behind this?
My name is Mike Dubrall and I am one of the thousands of adult volunteers who help make Scouting such a great program for our sons. I am in the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council in Northern California and have more than 1,000 miles of Scout backpacking experience. My belief is that Scout backpacking is different than other backpacking because it fosters camaraderie and leadership within the Troop and the Patrol - not just from the hike, but also because of all the time the groups spends together getting ready for the actual 50 miler. Scout backpacking provides an opportunity for life-changing learning experiences - and it better be fun and challenging also. Every Scout should complete at least one 50 miler or go to Philmont before they are a serious Eagle candidate.

50miler.com will always be a work in progress. Its success depends on the willingness of Scouts and Scouters to share their experiences, make recommendations, and answer questions. There are lots of ways to post your opinions on the site - but if you want to contact me directly, my email address is miked@50miler.com.
